PUSH Into the Power of Prayer

PUSH Into the Power of Prayer

The concept of prayer is generally understood as a means of communication with God. Although that is not wrong, real prayer is so much more than just a means of communication, it is the foundation of a transformative relationship that has the power to truly change your life.

As children, we are taught to pray before meals, pray before bed, and pray when something bad happens. These elementary prayers are usually prayers of thanksgiving or requests for others and even ourselves. Because we are taught these generalities of prayer at a young age, most of us understand its purpose, but many underestimate its power and the true potential that it holds for our lives and the lives of others.

The great news is because we serve a gracious God, it is never too late to begin your relationship with him. So, if you are looking for a way to really dig deep with God and uncover the power of prayer in your life, here are a few good places to start.

Understand the Importance

No matter what type of relationship you are in, communication is important. Without communication, no one would know how you feel, what your dreams are, what keeps you up at night, what worries you, what excites you. Without communication, you would be living your life feeling alone. It's no different with God.

God knows the desires of our hearts. He knows what our thoughts are before we even say them. But that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t want to hear them. 1 John 5:14 tells us, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will he will hear us.” God longs for us to communicate with him. He wants us to TELL him the desires of our hearts, to tell him our pains, our burdens, and our celebrations. When we tell him the desires of our hearts, that is when he will answer.

Put Your Prayers Into Action

Perhaps one of the best-known verses of the Bible is Matthew 7:7-8 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” This verse in two short sentences depicts exactly how our prayers with God should be. Not only do we need to ask earnestly, but we also need to seek and to knock.

In the modern world, to ask, seek, and knock means pray for the desires of your heart and listen for God’s answer, but also put in the action steps to make your prayers happen. For example, if you are praying for a new job you need to submit your resume; if you are praying for a better relationship with your spouse, you need to talk to them; if you are praying for a new home to live in, you might want to look at what you need to do to get a mortgage.

Share Your Prayers with Others

Praying for one another is one of the greatest and most effective ways to put your prayers into action. Hebrews 10:24-25 says “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another–and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” When we meet together and lift one another up we are spurring each other towards the love of Christ and we are able to experience it at a deeper level.

Today, meeting together can be difficult. Busy schedules tear us in different directions, but that doesn't mean we should give up on lifting one another up in prayer. Through social media and other technology apps, we have been given a powerful platform for communication. So, instead of using it to communicate negativity and volatility, let's use it to join together in prayer. When we pray our lives can change through the love of God, and when we pray together we can change the world.
